The thing about Rosacea home treatment is that, what works for one person may not be what works for another. The reason for this is that there are so many variables. Firstly, you need to understand what type of rosacea you have. Once you’ve done that, then we can proceed into the home treatments that may be most suited to your symptoms.
Rosacea symptoms have been attributed to a number of things (again, depending on which type) but in the end, all forms comes with inflammation of the skin to some degree. So our focus here will be, firstly to identify what causes this inflammation and how you can decide on a rosacea home treatment that best suits.
Your Rosacea Home Treatment Depends On Which Type You Have
1. Erythematotelangiectatic Rosacea – Persistent redness and visible blood vessels
This one is basically caused by blood vessel abnormalities. The blood vessels in the dermis (second layer of the skin) become enlarged so that the increased blood flow presents itself as a red flushed complexion, often with a burning sensation.
If you have this type of rosacea then you need a rosacea home treatment that soothes and cools the skin. So look for a moisturizer and cleanser that soothes and nourishes your skin. Some have identified calamine lotion as one of the best “overnight” applications for this kind of rosacea. You’ll look like a painted native, but if the person you’re sleeping with doesn’t mind, you’ll be fine.
The other thing you should do, is be aware of your rosacea triggers and avoid them. Again, these may be different for everyone but we have provided a list elsewhere on this site.
This might surprise you but sunscreen can be an effective rosacea home treatment for this type. Since it is designed to soothe and heal burnt skin, it also works well with Erythematotelangiectatic Rosacea.
Fresh cucumber blended into a facial mask may be a goood rosacea home treatment. Gently smooth the mask on your face, and leave it for a half a hour or so. Rinse the face completely with cool water, once the 30 minutes are up. You typically will see progress within a month of daily use.
This herbal remedy is an effective method for rosacea. Mix together two teaspoons of turmeric powder, four teaspoons of coriander powder, and one to two tablespoons of fresh milk until the combination turns into a smooth paste. Keep the concoction in the fridge. Once prepared, utilize the paste as a facial mask two times a day for ten minutes.
Rose Hip Oil
Rose hip oil is a well-known treatment for many skin problems, for example blisters, scars, sunburns, eczema, and more. It also works well to help with rosacea. You ought to use several drops of rose hip oil on the contaminated area every day.
Unfortunately, with this type of rosacea, the problem is a structural one and you may wish to consider a trip to your dermatologist and a discussion about photoderm laser therapy.
2. Papulopustular Rosacea – Sometimes called “Acne Rosacea”
This type of rosacea is similar to the above, except with the addition of acne-like sores and pimples. These papules and pustules have been attributed to three main sources:
(a) Dermodex mites
These are microscopic creatures that inhabit the pores of the skin. Studies have found the rosacea sufferers have more of these than the rest of the population. When they die, they putrify and this is what causes the acne. This is one reason why rosacea often gets worse in hot and humid conditions. They’ve even coined a name for acne rosacea that can be directly attributed to these little entities – Demodectic Rosacea.
(b) Helicobacter Pylori (HP bacteria)
This bacteria is better known for its role in stomach ulcers. Unfortunately, its presence also increases the amount of Nitrous Oxide in the blood and tissue which contributes to rosacea. Some say that HP may also stimulate the development of a protein called bradykinnin which in turn, triggers a dilation of the blood vessels – the underlying cause of rosacea.
(c) Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO)
When you have an excessive amount of bacteria in the gut, it ends up reflecting on your skin. There is a saying that goes “healthy gut, healthy skin”. The link between your gut and skin is well established.
With the above in mind, any rosacea home treatment we recommend will have the objective of targeting these causes.
First, you need to clean the pores of your skin at least twice daily. If you can find a non perfumed, non soap forumula that kills the mites, that’s the one to go for.
Tea Tree Oil
One of the popular rosacea home treatments to kill dermodex mites is by using tea tree oil. The only problem is, that you need the Tea Tree Oil to be at least 50% concentration and for many peoeple, this can irritate and potentially burn the skin.
A number of natural supplements have been found to kill off Hp bacteria and soothe the inflammation.
Monolaurin is derived from coconut oil and, interestingly, is also found in human breast milk. It has strong anti-inflammatory properties which help soothe the symptoms of Hp. You can take it in capsule form and a number of studies have found it is effective in killing off the bacteria.
Mastic Gum is derived from the mastic tree and acts as an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-fungal supplement that has been found by some studies to kill off Hp bacteria
L Glutamine is an amino acid that’s found in high levels throughout the body. It acts as an anti-inflammatory and is essential for the proper fucntion of the immune system. It is often taken as a supplement to heal any damage and inflammation caused by Hp.
If you feel the need for “something stronger” than the above three then antibiotics may be your first choice.
Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO)
Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar contains anti-inflammatory properties. It also balances the flora in your gut, not to mention providing many beneficial nutrients from the apple. You can either drink two tablespoons of apple cider vinegar each day or apply it topically to the skin – or do both for extra benefits!
Cat’s Claw helps to reduce food sensitivities by reestablishing a healthy intestinal environment. Take this 3 times each day (approximately 500mg each time).
Probiotics are good to take if you have SIBO because they will inhibit growth of unwanted bacteria and help your digestive functions work more efficiently. You can buy these at your local drug store or in supermarkets.
Watch Your Overall Health
Science has established that there is a direct link between your skin and your overall health. In fact, the skin has even been described as the “third kidney” because it’s another way of excreting toxins. So the less toxins coming out of the pores of your skin, the better. In this regard, you should consider the following natural internal cleansers.
1. Olive Leaf Extract
We have a whole article on this here. But let’s just say that OLE is a powerful antioxidant and will purge your system of unwanted toxins. The positive spinoff for you will be that you will notice an increase in energy while at the same time, protecting yourself from potential longer term degenerative conditions.
2. Lemon Juice
Lemon juice is a great rosacea home treatment because of its cleansing and immune system boosting properties. But many people don’t like the idea of a hot lemon drink, so why not make it more enjoyable? I have found that the most enjoyable way to get my lemon juice, is to squeeze one whole lemon into a large glass, add a few blocks of ice and then fill with plain soda water or sparkling mineral water. It’s delicious and very good for you. It will help keep colds and flu away in winter too!
3. Try to Minimize Stress
This is much easier than it sounds, but the fact is, stress has been identified as a major player in rosacea outbreaks. So if you can find ways to feel relaxed and positive about life, you’ll experience the benefits in more ways than one. There are some good hypnosis products out there which these days, you can get as .mps files on your mobile phone or audio player with a set of ear plugs. Some even include holosync technology (subliminal messages) for extra effect. These are generally very enjoyable and would be well worth your while investigating.
4. Change Your Pillow Case Every Day
This might seem like a strange recommendation, but as far as Rosacea home treatment remedies go, it could be one of the most effective. This is especially applicable if you have acne rosacea symptoms. Think about it! You lie on your pillow each night and as you turn, you rub your hair through it, then your face. You shed a combination of dead skin cells and facial oils plus whatever inhabits your hair, onto your pillowcase and then rub your face in it. It’s a breeding ground for potential infection! So try this and see if it makes a difference.
